Ah, there is nothing like a sponge cake! That method (apart from the tin drop) is exactly how I’ve been making sponge cakes forever. Indeed I did not realise there was any other way til I came across Nigella’s Victoria Sponge a while back. I’m sure your cake was highly appreciated by the Birthday Boy.

Small cages for wild animals are always disturbing. Especially when I imagine there would a lot of native bird life in the vicinity anyway.

I haven’t been to the Barossa for a very long time, your photos are great. It’s lovely that it reminds you of a specific book from your school years.

Enjoy that crack, it looks fab!

My husband watched me do the tin drop and thought I may possibly have gone mad..

Try the crack - even if you don't use matzah and just use a plain cracker - it's very delicious x

I hate to see caged birds. I’m so disappointed in Maggie.

I’ve never been to Maggie Beers farm shop, definitely won’t now. I would also find the caged birds distressing.

VERY distressing. And when I tried to google to find out more all I found was a TripAdvisor comment about the birds having no shade in the heat. Just made me feel sadder.

Porcini ice cream... Hmmm... I love mushrooms and I love ice cream. I can't, however, imagine a world in which I would enjoy the two together. Each, I suppose, to their own.

I have just read about this new Gelato Messina wine bar - gives the mushroom ice cream some playmates https://www.broadsheet.com.au/sydney/food-and-drink/article/erin-gelato-messina-marrickville-hq-putting-ice-cream-dinner-wine?lid=69a141g06bss

hmmm… as my husband says when confronted with a twist on something we’ve always had, ‘I don’t know how I feel about that…’

Love love love Curtis Sittenfeld too – have been recommending to everyone! So strange/disturbing about those birds…
